How outlier detection works, what the scores mean, and how to turn the data into your next video.

VANTAGEVID hasn't launched yet. This article describes how the product will work once access opens — for Lifetime Deal members first in August 2026, then publicly at launch in October 2026. There is no login or dashboard on this site today.

How outlier detection works

When you submit a YouTube @handle, VANTAGEVID fetches the channel's 50 most recent public videos via YouTube Data API v3. It calculates the channel median — the view count that sits in the middle of the distribution — and then scores every video against that baseline.

Videos that significantly overperformed — accounting for recency, engagement, and velocity — surface as outliers. These are the videos whose patterns you should replicate. Not the ones with the most raw views (which could just be old), but the ones that genuinely outperformed your channel's typical output.

Key concepts

Channel Median

The median view count across all published videos on a channel. Used as the performance baseline. We use the median — not the mean — so a single breakout video doesn't distort the baseline for everything else.

Outlier Score

A composite score (0–100) representing how significantly a video overperformed. Calculated from performance ratio, recency weight, engagement rate delta, and publish-to-peak velocity. A score above 70 means the video is a meaningful outlier. Above 85 means it's a standout you should study closely.

Performance Ratio

Views on a specific video ÷ channel median. A video with 3× the channel median has a performance ratio of 3.0. This is the raw signal; the outlier score contextualises it.

Publish-to-Peak Velocity

How quickly a video reached its peak view count after publishing. Slow-growing videos that climbed over months are weighted differently than videos that spiked immediately — both matter, for different reasons.

How to use the results

Scan your top 3 competitors

Find the 2–3 channels in your niche with the highest growth rate. Scan them. Look for outlier patterns — title structures, thumbnail styles, topic angles — that appear in multiple outliers across multiple channels.

Compare your outliers to theirs

After scanning your own channel, compare your outlier score distribution to a competitor's. If their median outlier score is higher, their content formula is stronger. Study what they're doing differently.

Note the recency of outliers

An outlier from 2 years ago tells you what worked then. Recent outliers (past 90 days) reflect current algorithm and audience behaviour. Weight recent outliers more heavily when planning your next video.

Common questions

How many videos does a scan analyse?

VANTAGEVID fetches the 50 most recent public videos from a channel. Channels with fewer than 10 videos may have limited outlier data — at least 20 videos is recommended for reliable baseline calculation.

Why is the median used instead of the mean?

A single viral video can make the mean 10–20× higher than every other video on the channel. The median is resistant to these outliers in the baseline, which makes the performance ratio of individual videos more meaningful and actionable.

What if all my videos have similar view counts?

Channels with consistent performance (low variance) will show few or no strong outliers. This is actually useful information — it suggests your content is performing predictably rather than having breakout potential. Look at competitor scans to see what patterns break out in your niche.

Does scanning a channel notify the channel owner?

No. Scanning uses YouTube's public Data API v3. It reads the same data anyone can see on YouTube. No account connection or permission from the scanned channel is required.

How often can I scan the same channel?

You can re-scan any channel at any time. Each re-scan counts as one of your monthly scan credits. New videos published since your last scan will appear with fresh outlier scores.

What does "upgrade prompt" mean on the channel stats results?

The Intelligence Hub outlier scan is the full featured tool. Some adjacent data points (engagement breakdown, upload schedule heatmap) are returned with an upgrade suggestion if your plan doesn't include them.
